PROFILE

Prof. Xie mainly engaged in the research of principle and technology of air pollution control for urban area, integrated planning of regional pollution control, environmental impact assessment, and energy issues. He has taken part in multiple research programs on national, provincial and ministerial levels, and obtained important scientific achievements. In recent years, he systematically studied the air pollutant emission inventory in China, including the anthropogenic VOCs emission inventory in China during 1980 to 2008 based on GIS technology, the natural VOCs emission inventory in China during 1988-2003, the anthropogenic black carbon emission inventory in China during 1980-2008, and the vehicular emission inventory and the emission factor database in China during 1980 to 2006.
He developed the vertical monitoring system for air pollutants, and identified the seasonal variation and vertical distribution patterns of vehicular pollutant in street canyon. He also explored the air pollutant dispersion model for road and street simulation and established the methodology for traffic management assessment. 
In the field of regional acid deposition control, he mapped the critical loads of acid deposition in China, based on the basic equations for calculating critical loads of acid deposition using static mass balance of critical alkalinity leaching of ecosystem, the new method to calculate critical alkalinity using the critical value indicating harmless to biological organisms, and the three-dimensional acid deposition control theory of Sulphur-Nitrogen-Base cation on critical load of ecosystem.
He established the methods and principles for the selection of ambient air quality monitoring stations with respect to the characteristics and monitoring requirement in different cities, investigated optimization method for monitoring stations and compiled the Guideline for the Optimization of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations, and the Guideline for the Selection and Optimization of Ambient Ozone and Fine Particle Monitoring Network.
