Dr. Chen’s past research focused on the formation and evolution of atmospheric organic aerosol. She developed expertise in Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer and its data analysis during her Ph.D. study. She deployed this instrument for the first time in the Amazon rainforest (Brazil) as part of the AMAZE-08 campaign. She was also involved in multiple research projects that were conducted in Harvard Environmental Chamber and applied a chemically detailed, online partitioning model to simulate the formation of secondary organic aerosol based on Master Chemical Mechanism. Later on, she developed new scheme to simulate the elemental composition and the aging of organic aerosol in global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem). Her current research at PKU focuses on the effects of air pollution on climate and human health.
