His research focus is on solid waste pollution control and utilization, heavy metal pollution prevention and soil remediation. He has invented novel methods, technologies and equipments for solid waste incineration, including (1) a pyrolysis-and-gasification incinerator, which is suitable for burning China's municipal solid waste with low calorific value (~1000 kcal/kg) and high moisture (~60%), (2) a purification process and equipment to remove dioxins and heavy metals from flue gas (including wet process and dry process), (3) a purification technology for hydrogen chloride gas removal from flue gas at a temperature of over 800ºC, (4) CO2 capture technologies from MSW incineration flue gas, (5) a hydrometallurgical method for metal recycle from waste incineration fly ash, and (6) preparation of foam insulation brick and microcrystalline composite ceramic plate using MSW incineration fly ash or bottom ash as raw material. Some of the above technologies have been applied in the Jinan Waste-to-Energy Plant (Shandong Province) and Shandong Difende Environmental Science and Technology Co., Ltd.
He has been doing research in the field of heavy metal pollution prevention and soil remediation as well. He has developed in-situ remediation technologies for heavy metals contaminated soils. Among them, the in-situ remediation technology for heavy metals (Pb, Zn and Cd) contaminated soils was applied in Jiangxi Province and 250 acres of farmland soil was remediated. After remediation, the concentrations of heavy metals in the crop (cabbage, potato and rice) are below the "Maximum Allowable Levels of Contaminants in Foods". The in-situ extraction technology for Pb/Zn/Cd contaminated farmland soil and the in-situ immobilization technology for As/Hg contaminated farmland soil were successfully applied in Guizhou Province.
