Research interests are in the fundamentals of solid-liquid two-phase flow, environmental modeling, wastewater treatment and river sustainability. In recent years, he has established an assessment and prediction method for sediment-induced disasters in large river basins, and put forward new concepts such as functional no-flow as well as the corresponding thresholds which are of primary imoprtance to river sustainability. Natural river systems are investigated in close connection with pollution source control, e.g. wastewater treatment with particular attention to total nitrogen removal. His group developed an one-stage method for simultaneous removal of carbon and nitrogen from wastewater, which greatly simplified the conventional two-stage process because of the isolated novel bacteria capable of ammonia removal and denitrification under the sole aerobic environment. The technology is of great significance to the construction of wastewater treatment systems and upgrading conventional systems from secondary- to tertiary-level. His recent study also covers electrochemical oxidation of biorefractory organics and adsorption of heavy metals by nanomaterials. He has been founding directors of Institute of Environmental Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering, Key Laboratory of Water and Sediment Sciences (Ministry of Education), National Metrology Certification Laboratory of Environmental Engineering at PKU, and Beijing Engineering Technology Research Center for Advanced Wastewater Treatment. Till now, he has finished (as coordinator) more than 30 national or international research projects, published over 200 peer reviewed international journal papers and awarded about 50 invention patents. PhD student under his supervision became the winner of "the National Hundred Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation" in 2013.
