Dr. Ye has been engaged in water treatment theory and technology research for over ten years. In recent years, he has new findings in the following areas which are related to biological denitrification and treatment of refractory organic wastewater. 
1) Dr. Ye studied an efficient denitrification technology by immobilized microorganisms. He invented the Immobilized Biological Aerated Filters (I-BAF) technology, which combined high efficient microorganism and immobilization technology through a macroporous netty functionalized carrier. Inside the carrier, anaerobic and aerobic micro-environments are formed at the same time, which is helpful for microorganism to resist to toxicity of free ammonia. It solved the technical problem that nitrification and denitrification can hardly occur simutaneously. By using I-BAF, 99% of ammonia nitrogen can be removed, and the removal efficiency of total nitrogen can be higher than 85%. Compared with the traditional biological methods, the tolerant limit concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and free nitrogen increased more than 10 times. Due to its high efficiency, this achievement was considered to reach “advanced level for treatment of high ammonia nitrogen wastewater in the world”, by authoritative distinguished experts from Chinese Ministry of Education in 2007. It also won the first prize of Chinese College Science and Technology Progress in 2007. Furthermore, “High Efficient Microorganism and Immobilization Denitrification Technology” won the State Technological Invention Prize in 2013. 
2) Dr. Ye developed a treatment technology for TNT wastewater. The microbial community special for typical pollutants in TNT wastewater was screened, the degradation machanism and pathway were clarified, and the biological degradation conditions of TNT were ascertained. This technology made it possible for biological treatment of TNT wastewater. For different kinds of TNT wastewater, Dr. Ye and his team developed the combination technology of physico-chemical pretreatment and I-BAF, which was applied in 6 wastewater treatment projects in China. It is helpful for reducing pollution of Taizi River in Liaoning province, caused by TNT wastewater discharged from Liaoning Qingyang Special Chemical Corporation, which made major contributions to ensure the water quality security and maintain local residents’ health.
He also conducted a lot of research in the field of treatment of other refractory organic wastewater and heavy metal wastewater. Dr. Ye’s research findings have been applied in more than 60 wastewater treatment projects, which lead to great social influence and higher visibility. He has been invited by the government of China to participate in the formulation and implementation of water pollution emergency plan, such as emergency disposal for aniline leakage in Shanxi Province in 2012. He is also one of the environmental experts to make comments for “24h Program” in CCTV. He also won the United Nations Global Human Settlements Green Technology Award in 2009 and gold award in 41st International Invention Exhibition held in Geneva in 2013. In recent five years, he has published 53 SCI papers, among which 15 papers were published in internationally top journals, such as Journal of Hazardous Materials, Chemosphere and Water Research. These papers have been cited 311 times. He has 22 invention patents and 1 international patent.
