PKU-LSE Double Master Degree Program Introducation

1.  Introduction

In order to cultivate leading thinkers with an international perspective in environmental field, Peking University (PKU) and the London School of Economics and Economics (LSE) have jointly launched a double master's degree programme. The project will grant students a double master's degree, namely a master's degree in environmental management from PKU and a master's degree in science (MSc) from LSE.

The project will focus on the environment and health, China from multiple perspectives of environment, economy, society, energy, and resources through theoretical teaching and case analysis. Environmental management and policy, providing graduates with the basic scientific foundation of environment-health, cognitive and analytical methods, management and policy implications, and possible management and policy responses, etc., to cultivate comprehensive analysis of environmental problems.

This project is open to students from all over the world.

All professional courses and writing courses in this project are taught in English.

 

2.  About the Programme

This project has a two-year academic structure, that is, one year of study at the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (CESE), Peking University, and the second year of study at the Department of Geography and Environment of the London School of Economics and Economics and Political Science.

The specific course arrangements are based on those published by LSE and PKU.

(1) Year 1 at Peking University – Masters in Sciences in Environmental Management

The study of the first year is arranged and managed by CESE of Peking University. The teaching staff of this project are mainly from CESE, and some from other colleges, departments and centers at PKU.

Requirements

In the first year, students are required to complete 21 credits, including compulsory courses and a thesis. Among them, 2 credits are for language (2 credits for Chinese students on English language, 2 credits for non-Chinese students on Chinese language), 2 credits on a general course called Introduction to China, 1 credits for essay writing and 16 credits for professional courses are listed in the table below.

Supervisor

Students receive guidance from their supervisors from the first semester.

Thesis

Students need to determine the thesis topic in the first semester, and write and defend in the second semester. Peking University generally announces the deadline for submission and defense of papers at the beginning of each academic year. Students of this project must reply before the deadline to ensure the award of the degree. 

(2) Year 2, at LSE

Arranged and managed by the Department of Geography and Environment, London School of Economics and Political Science.

Requirements

Students must complete the course (both taught in English) and complete a master's thesis to obtain a master's degree.

Thesis

At the end of the school year at LSE, a graduation thesis must be submitted.

 

3.  Tuition and Scholarship

Students of this project should pay their tuition fees for the year of study in accordance with the prescribed standards. The tuition fees for this project at Peking University and the London School of Economics and Political Science are subject to the official announcement of the two colleges that year.

4.  Master's degree

The degrees awarded in this project require two years of completed study. It is NOT possible to receive the PKU degree after one year at PKU. Students must complete all courses of PKU and LSE, and pass all the assessments before they can obtain a master of science degree in environmental management from PKU and a master of science degree from LSE in Regulation, or Environment and Development, or Environmental Economics and Climate Change. If you cannot complete all the courses of the project or fail to meet the graduation requirements of the two schools, you cannot separately obtain a master's degree in environmental management from PKU or a master's degree in science from LSE.
