Peking University concluded its Second Summer Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) Workshop for Carbon Neutrality on August 16, 2024. This five-day workshop, co-hosted by the Institute of Carbon Neutrality(IAMC member institute) and the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, attracted nearly 30 young scholars from over 20 prestigious universities and research institutions worldwide. This workshop, along with the First IAM workshop, is sponsored by the Energy Foundation China.

Participants included students and early career scholars from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Tokyo, University College London, and the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences, among others. The workshop provided attendees with cutting-edge perspectives and hands-on training in integrated assessment modeling, fostering interdisciplinary insights and collaboration.

The first four days featured a series of cutting-edge lectures by experts from leading IAM teams such as IMAGE, AIM, GCAM, E3METL, and China TIMES. Distinguished speakers, including Dr. Vassilis Daioglou, Dr. Shinichiro Fujimori, Dr. Haewon McJeon, Dr. Hongbo Duan, and Dr. Chen Wenying, presented their latest model developments and research findings. Additional data-driven modeling perspectives were shared by experts including Dr. Yueming ‘Lucy’ Qiu, Dr. Haitong Sun, Dr. Yin Long, and Dr. Jianxiao Wang. Topics covered included econometric models, interdisciplinary approaches, bottom-up methods, spatial statistics, and artificial intelligence etc.

In addition to lectures, the workshop offered personalized one-on-one training for each participant. Based on their pre-submitted research proposals, students engaged in hands-on experiences with either IMED or GCAM, under the guidance of their designated tutors. The workshop concluded on the final day with presentations by the participants, who shared their modeling exercises and outlined their next steps. This comprehensive five-day experience laid a solid foundation for further in-depth research in IAMs.

“The purpose of our annual workshop,” reflected the founder of this workshop and IAMC’s primary contact at PKU, Prof. Hancheng Dai, “is to spark a keen interest in IAMs among China’s next-generation scholars and scientists. By integrating their own research with hands-on model training, this workshop aims to prepare future leaders with a solid theoretical foundation as well as cutting-edge modeling skills.”
