The International Workshop on China - UK Climate and Sustainability Research Co-hosted by Peking University and the University of Strathclyde Was Successfully Held
published date:2025-11-11

To further promote academic exchange in the field of global climate change and sustainable development, and to enhance cooperation and innovation between Chinese and UK universities in integrated assessment modeling and energy economics, the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at Peking University and the Centre for Energy Policy (CEP) at the University of Strathclyde jointly held the China–UK International Workshop on Climate and Sustainability Research on November 8, 2025, at Peking University. Experts and scholars from both countries gathered to engage in in-depth discussions on topics such as the development of environmental and climate policy models, policy assessment applications, and future cooperation opportunities. The workshop aimed to strengthen the alignment between modeling theory, technical pathways, and policy practice through joint China–UK exchanges, and to explore cooperation mechanisms centered on multi-model comparison and data sharing, thereby contributing to global low-carbon transition and sustainable development research.

The workshop featured keynote speeches and roundtable discussions by leading academic representatives from both sides. The agenda included keynote presentations, methodological sharing, and sessions on collaborative mechanisms.

Experts from the University of Strathclyde introduced the latest progress made by the UK team in the field of global integrated assessment modeling, highlighting CEP’s recent applications in climate policy evaluation, energy system modeling, and sustainable development pathway analysis. Professors from PKU shared progress in multi-scenario simulation, regional emission reduction pathways, and co-benefit policy assessments, as well as their research approaches on model localization and multi-sector coupling.

During the roundtable session, scholars conducted in-depth discussions on topics such as “model integration and database sharing,” “multi-level coupling approaches in climate policy assessment,” and “planning future collaborative research projects.” Participants agreed that China and the UK should further strengthen research collaboration and academic exchange between young scholars, jointly building an open and shared modeling research network. It was also proposed that the two sides would pursue substantial cooperation in joint model development and comparative policy simulations, providing scientific support for global climate governance and regional sustainable transitions.

The successful convening of this workshop not only laid a solid foundation for China–UK collaboration in global integrated assessment modeling but also established a long-term platform for academic exchange and project cooperation between the two universities. Looking ahead, Peking University will continue to uphold the principles of openness, cooperation, and mutual benefit, working closely with international partners to advance the scientific and systematic progress of global climate governance and contribute to the realization of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
