Title: Sino-Swiss Cooperation on Air Quality and Pollution Control Technologies

Speaker: Dr. Jing Wang
Assistant professor, Institute of Environmental Engineering, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

Time: 16:00--17:00 p.m  Sep 3, 2014

Location: Room 301, Old Geoscience Building
Abstract: China’s air pollution constitutes one of the most urgent problems facing the nation. Chinese and Swiss federal governments have been engaged in intensive cooperation on “Clean Air and Climate Change Legislation and Policy Framework”. I will introduce the Swiss Ordinance on Air Pollution Control and present results from the Swiss National Air Pollution Monitoring Network. My group, in collaboration with Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation, has built up a world unique system for emission measurement from commercial aircraft engines. The study provides highly valuable data for understanding air pollution and climate impact by the aviation industry. Protective equipment such as filters and respirators are important for pollution control. I will present results on nanofiber filters and performance evaluation.
Bio sketch : Jing Wang is an assistant professor in the Institute of Environmental Engineering at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich). He is also leading the group Air Quality and Particle Research at EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology). Jing Wang obtained his PhD degree from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Minnesota in 2005. He received the 'Best Dissertation' Award in Physical Sciences and Engineering, University of Minnesota in 2006 and the Smoluchowski award conferred by the Association for Aerosol Research (Gesellschaft für Aerosolforschung, GAeF) in recognition of his contribution to the field of “Environmental, Health and Safety Impact of Nanomaterials” in 2011.  His main research interests are air quality, environmental and health impact of airborne pollutants, airborne nanoparticle measurement and emission control, air and water filtration.
