Professor Bert Brunekreef specialized in Air Pollution and Environmental Health. From 1979-2000, he has been employed by the Department of Environmental and Tropical Health (later: Department of Environmental Sciences) of the Wageningen University, Netherlands. In 1985, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Environmental Epidemiology from the University of Wageningen. In 1986/1987, he spent the academic year at the Harvard School of Public Health, studying health effects of air pollution episodes, and of living in damp homes.
He served for several years as ISEE councilor. In 1998, he was chosen to be president of the Society. Since the early 1990s, he has coordinated four EU funded studies in the field of air pollution, allergy and health. He now acts a coordinator of the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE, 2008-2012). He is Director of Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) since 2005. He also served as advisor on national and international panels in the field of environmental health, WHO and the US EPA. Bert Brunekreef is co-author of more than 300 peer reviewed journal articles in the field of environmental epidemiology and exposure assessment.
